Description

Answer the following questions as if you were giving advice to a student teacher.
How would I introduce a
discussion of my approach
to instructional design?

I would first explain my technique for teaching.
What are my resources
for designing units and
lessons?

  1. Curriculum
  2. Peer Teachers
  3. Technology
    1. My Files
    2. Internet Files
What do I generally
do first?

How do I interact with
the standards?

Our curriculum has been mapped out with the standards. So when I reference curriculum topics I already have the standards. However, this is not true for all subject areas. I am still working on a curriculum map for writing.
To sum this up I let the standards introduce my teaching by allowing an objective but my students drive my instruction.
What are my constraints
and how do I respond
to them?

It has taken me long time to 'learn' how to best layout my lesson plans. Initially, it was when do I do this and how do I do it. Then it was how much time should I spend on it. Now, I have a really easy format that I can apply to all subjects which is also really easy to follow for my principals and substitutes.
How do I approach
student assessment?

I assess in many different ways. After all my assessments drive my lesson planning. I am a constant lesson plan changer. I have them on the computer and in my plan book to allow for this. I assess my students in the traditional way as well as in a more constructivist fashion. After every lesson I have my kids rate their progress with everything from thumbs up, to the side, or down to one word summaries in that given subject's journal.
How do I approach
post-assessment?

I adjust my plans...If they struggled I teach it again in a new way. If some struggled I pull groups. If at least 70-80% were successful I move on making note that those 20-30% will need future assistance.
How do I approach
self-assessment?

I constantly make notes in my hard copy lesson plans. I note on how a lesson went or if I need to carry it into another day. If I really need to take note of something I stick it on a 'post-it' so I can remove it and apply it to future lessons.
What are areas I would
like to learn more about
and/or become better at?

TIME! I spend a lot of time planning what with all of the forever changing resources. I need to better manage my time when it comes to planning.
What final advice would I
give about my approach to
instructional design?
